Re: Want to Id this without plucking it first

Sedges have a triangular growth habit. The blades grow in 3 directions vs only 2 for a grass. Some of your pictures seem to show a triangular shape of the blades but it doesnt stand out Also, the stem should be triangular. Rolling it between your fingers, you should be able to feel each side of tria...

Re: Effective squirrel repellent?

Whats more effective than Cayanne pepper is Cayanne pepper oil. More of it sticks to the seed than the powder. https://www.amazon.com/Coles-FS16-Flaming-Squirrel-16-Ounce/dp/B003XR9QWA/ref=sr_1_4?crid=BLR12YJ5NBLL&keywords=cayenne+pepper+oil+bird+food&qid=1641433867&sprefix=cayenne+pepper+oil+bird+f...

Re: Help wiring a ceiling fan

are the fan wires in this picture or have you removed the fan to take the picture. I'm assuming this is the box the fan is mounted on and the fan is not shown in the picture. I see 3 cables entering the box so it looks like hot and neutral come into the box (cable 1) and then exit the box to go some...

Re: Effective squirrel repellent?

It's probably going to be a state law, not city. Here in Illinois squirrels are a protected species. "It shall be unlawful for any person at any time to take, possess, sell, or offer for sale, propagate, or release into the wild, any of these wild birds (dead or alive) and parts of wild birds (inclu...

Re: Kill moss without killing clover

You could try killing both the moss and the clover and then reseeding with microclover. If you like experimenting, buy a small packet of seed and try it on a test patch.

Re: Water/Condensation Basement Window

I'd say the builder either neglected to insulate or did a really bad job of insulating above that window. Pull the upper trim piece off the wall, dig out whatever insulation is in there, and squirt in some expanding door and window foam insulation. Make sure it gets all the way to the outside wall s...

Re: Raccoons got me!

Do those motion sensor frequency things work with raccoons? My experience says no. One night they were running around on my roof. I went outside and picked up the hose and decided to squirt them as they poked their heads over the edge. Pretty soon, all three of them were staring down at me waiting ...

Re: Deer deterrent from young fruit trees

I usually go to home depot and buy a section of corrugated 4" flexible plastic pipe like this https://www.homedepot.com/p/4-in-x-10-ft-Corex-Leach-Bed-Drain-Pipe-4020010/100183471 Perforated to allow some air circulation. Then I slit it down the side with a knife and push it onto the tree trunk. It ...

Also next spring, if the pre emergent doesnt get all of it, use quinclorac on anything that sprouts.

Re: Winter fertilizer

I usually go the the big box store and buy the cheapest fertilizer I can find. That usually means it has the lowest amount of slow release nitrogen in it and the highest fast release nitrogen content.

I still end up with around 15-20% slow release but its all thats available around here.

Two things 1. The battery isnt waterproof. If it gets water in it, thats the end of the battery. Dont ask how I know this. 2. Was the battery left for a long time just sitting? Sometimes the battery will self discharge. When it does that, the processor inside the battery that determines charge state...

Oy! THey're everywhere this year. Brown marmorated Stinkbug. I hate them!

No, they're not the culprit. I'd say its squirrels getting building materials for their winter nests.

I think its a tear out but not replace. If you replace with another boxwood, it'll just die too.

I had 5 boxwoods succumb and just resigned myself to no more boxwoods.
