Bermuda to dominate common Bermuda ?

Post by Alias-Doe » Wed Oct 02, 2019 8:18 pm

Like the title says I’m asking if there’s a Bermuda cultivar/varieties capable of dominating common Bermuda ? I’m done trying to kill my common Bermuda so I’v decided to follow the “if you can’t beat them join them” strategy . Is there such a grass ? Common Bermuda been running over my fescue/rye lawn for years so I thought maybe I could nuke the whole yard and see if KBG with its similar root system would have a chance . Lol silly me . It’s been a couple months since I killed off everything with multiple cocktails of chemicals and wouldn’t you know it the Bermuda is back .

My plan now is to just embrace the curse and maybe seed with some type of Bermuda that looks good and can survive without being dominated by common Bermuda . Any suggestions ?

None unless you change how the lawn is mowed. I know there are various hybrids that become dominant when mowed at less than 1/2".

I would have to do some major leveling to mow that low . I guess I’m stuck with the common Bermuda until my next house . It’s not bad looking I just hate how aggressive it is . Completely suffocated a shaded side yard with soft dense FF that my daughter loved playing in .

Bermuda is a Jekyll and Hyde grass. Common is nice to me at 3/4"-1/2" I dislike it at 1" or taller.

I gave up this summer. Hot and dry and I was away, my kbg died. The common Bermuda has gone nuts. I'm not fighting anymore

From a few sprigs to this in < 2 years...

NC is a rather brutal place for a cool season grass.

I have a similar problem with CB in my Tifway 419 sod. The Common Bermuda is was a contaminate in a few of the sod pieces.

Look closely at the pic. The CB is still inside the rectangle sod piece, so the Tifway is containing it. I experimented and left half of it at 2 inches and the other half of the sod piece at 0.75 inches. In the 0.75 inch grass the CB is much less noticeable

CB struggles if you can mow it at less than 0.5"

I'm not very sure about the climate there but I'd think in Delaware you would struggle to grow Bermuda. I thought that was cool season territory?

It’s in the transition zone both cool and warm grow . They use Bermuda in common areas and highways and such . That’s how it invaded my yard . I was actually wondering the other day if it’s possible for Bermuda to completely die from the cold ? Last 5+ years our winters been warmer than usual so maybe there’s hope it’ll die from winter kill if we get a really cold winter .

It’s looking like that’s my only option . It actually didn’t look too bad before I nuked it .

If you keep it mowed nice and tight, I think that would look really good.
