How much of Dandelion root?

Post by Automate »

I've been hand weeding dandelions. I have a tool that gets underground and grabs the tap root. Even so the tap root usually breaks off between 1" and 3" under the ground. Is this enough to kill the whole weed? The tap root is usually 4 inches or longer. I'm I wasting my time if I don't get the whole tap root?

No, you're not wasting your time.

I find that dandelions are the easiest to get rid of, and the more you weed them, the less and less of them come back.

I don't use herbicides, so I personally use a sod knife and yank them out. Sometimes a piece of the root may remain, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it will come back.

So long as you water your lawn well (every other day) and apply some fertilizer twice per summer, the the healthy grass will take over.
I used to have a lot of dandelions, now I barely have any. I might get one or two per month, and that's it.

They're also easiest to get out right after a good rain.

The root often snaps on me, leaving some of it in the ground. Never had a problem with it regrowing.

Thanks for the feedback. My yard was covered with them last year. Wife wants to start an organic garden in part of the yard and does not like me spraying chemicals. I have already pulled hundreds of dandelion. Nice to know it's not wasted.

Dandelion can have roots up to 14 feet. It’s crazy

A gross exaggeration for sure. Where did you see/read this? Granted they have a tough tap root, but even 14 inches is questionable.
Tier 1 - I just want something green. Perennial "weeds" that stay green year round are welcome.

Typically they only get to 6-18in
Root System: Dandelion has a strong taproot that it is commonly 6 to 18 inches deep but can penetrate to a depth of 10 feet or more
