Too late to kill lawn before seeding?

Post by Sphero43 »

Plan to overseed around Aug 20th. On the other side of my driveway is about 1500 sq ft and overrun by patches of crabgrass. I thought of trying to use tenacity and hope for the best, but now I’m wondering if I should just kill the section and seed. How much time is typically needed for a job like that?

Most people like to spray 3x, with a total of 2 one-week intervals between (one interval between each spray). So realistically, you need 2-3 weeks. You have that, if you can start very soon. Check out the renovation guide.

I wouldn't overseed that weedy mix. Definitely renovate.
Front: Northern mix - mostly TTTF, KBG, TTPR. Back: Firecracker and Bullseye TTTF with America, Rugby 2, Bewitched KBG. Upper Side: Mostly TTPR, KBG. Lower Side: similar to front. Low-input: TF/FF, KBG, PR. Always seeding somewhere or fighting Triv.

Tenacity alone wouldn't take care of those weeds, a better option would be tenacity+quinclorac+ methylated seed oil. However, given the amount of weed pressure that you are dealing with, you just need to gly the whole thing and reno it.

Spray glyohosate now, scalp in 2 or 3 days, spray again, you're good to go seeding the next day when its been dry for a bit.

Plenty of time especially if you are seeding PRG or TTTF. I would say you have about 4-6 weeks for those. 2-4 weeks for KBG. If you aren't sure what kind of seed you want I would get on that asap because you might want to put in a little research and places are going to run out.

You need a watering plan for seeds. Next year make sure you use a Pre emergent (eg. crabgrass preventer) around early april.

Thanks all, I’m going for it! I applied some stuff this morning so fingers crossed.

I have my SS5000 sitting in the garage ready for seeding in a few weeks.
