Question concerning a fescue lawn in West Central Mo

Post by Dentguy »

Ok guys first post here. Over all my lawn looks pretty good but when you looks close there’s quite a bit of dead or brown undergrowth. Around Labor Day I mow it down short, dethatch, aerate and overseed. I have a 4’ dethatcher I pull over it several different directions then clean it up with a sweeper. I end up with a mountain of dead grass but maybe I’m still not doing enough dethatching? It’s turf type tall fescue mowed at 4” with a John Deere 740r. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's summer time. Your TTTF isn't going to be perfectly dark green all over this time of year unless you have irrigation system and fungus program. To me looks like a mixture of just heat stress and maybe some fungus mixed in.. Also looks like your blades need sharpened. TTTF very rarely needs dethatched. They just don't create very much thatch at all when managed properly. In about 2 months things will turn around for you and you can start some fertilizing.

How mature is the turf, & how often do you overseed?

Im wondering if this isn't simply caused by your thick turf, a bit of survival of the fittest the way some grass blades are drying out and others are doing just fine. Not sure what the turf is like in person but that picture looks real thick.
I'd be curious if anyone else had ever experienced that. I know I did when I went heavy-handed one year.

Yeah no doubt if it gets too thick some of it will have to die back to allow the rest to thrive. I'm not really seeing anything too concerning in these pictures. Looks like a typical TTTF lawn in middle of July.

It could also be one or some of the cultivar(s) that might be less heat/drought resistant.
