Problem with new Mazama Reno

Post by Mike_12 » Sat Oct 12, 2019 10:24 am

First time poster, although I've been the forum quite a bit and find it as a very valuable resource. So I've recently renovated about 2500 sq ft with 100% kbg mazama. It's now about 42 days old and has been filling in nicely.

Now to the problem. We previously had a lawn care company providing mowing, fertilizer service which was put on hold since start of reno but what we forgot to cancel was fall aeration and seeding. So they came through on Wednesday and ended up pulling up some sections of the new turf and also put down tall fescue seed. I think I should be able to clean up cores and roll the areas that were damaged to flatten it out. What I am concerned about is the tall fescue seed. It is late In the season here and I would expect a freeze in the next couple of weeks. I am in zone 6b.

Any advise on what I could put down to prevent the fescue from coming in?
Should I not worry about it since it's so late in the year and it's unlikely to survive?

I would avoid water and do prodiamine now. It is earlier than the 60 days, but the tttf can germinate.

Yea I would get prodiamine down asap, make sure you get good coverage.

Sorry to hear about this...

The crew doing this should have double checked ...

Agree with others, may also consider putting down herbicide once your mazama reaches i think 60 days.

Would help injure/kill newly germinate fescue ... which one? I’m not sure but in theory it should help.

Also, get a plugging tool for the spots that got tore up.

Thanks for the advise guys. I did get the prodiamine down today so I’m praying it prevents germination. After rolling the pulled up sections of turf I think those areas will fill in and be fine.

Should I go ahead and water in the prodiamine? No rain in forecast until later in week. I know I want to keep it as dry as possible but I know it needs some water for activation.

I’m planning on doing a blanket herbicide app toward the end of the month just in case any seedlings do germinate. Would any particular herbicide be more potent and have a better chance of damaging/killing young grass ttf?

Yes water it in.

I'm not sure what will hurt the tttf more and not hurt the kbg. Maybe 2, 4-D.

Cant believe the crew didnt recognize baby KBG and at least consider calling since you already cancelled other services. Hope everything works out. How frustrating.
