People In Your Yard

Post by MoeBermuda »

How do you guys handle people in your yard? I’m not talking about friends or family enjoying the fruits of your labor. How do you respond to people walking through the neighborhood wanting to step in your grass or feel it? What do you say to older kids riding bikes or trying to catch frogs in your lawn?

I was just watching tv, and I heard a bunch of noise outside. When I went out there, the kids from across the street are on bikes in my front yard trying to smash frogs with their bike tires. I didn’t blow up on them, but I was pretty stern about getting off the grass with bikes. Did I overreacted? What would you have done?

I generally don’t do anything unless it’s someone I don’t know driving a motorized vehicle through my lawn.

I would've also politely asked them to stay off the lawn with their bikes, but I don't have this problem in my front yard because the sidewalk is on the other side so people usually walk and kids ride on the other side.

We were all kids once! Kids roller blade and ride bikes through the corners of the front yard every once in a while because I’m on a corner lot and also there are no sidewalks when cars come by.

The parents in the neighborhood tell their kids not to get in my yard because of how nice it looks.

Now... dog owners letting their dogs do their business and not cleaning up, that’s a different story ..

I think this is the key; The parents in the neighborhood tell their kids not to get in my yard because of how nice it looks.

Create an expectation in the neighborhood and they will stay off.

I don't have any issues with people/kids walking or laying or even touching my lawn. My only pet peeve is that I don't want kids riding their bike on my lawn as it may leave a rut. Beyond that I don't really have an issue with people enjoying the lawn as that is what it's there for. I rarely ever have any issues with people walking their dogs and letting them relieve themselves on the lawn, it happens so infrequently that I don't really concern myself with it.

I currently working on trying to have a nice looking yard and with all the time, money and work I've been putting into iti don't mind people in it.
My problem came about when a household a few doors up walk their two dogs and let them do their business in other people's yard including ours. On more than occasion we have seen them let their dogs relieve themselves and not clean it up. Last week I had enough and ordered some signs for the front yard and now when the boys walking the dogs see me outside in the yard they go up the hill instead of towards our yard

We have the same thing happening here. Sometimes in the lawn, but mostly dog owners cleaning up and then leaving little plastic baggies on curbs through out the neighborhood. Not only frustrating but unsightly and nasty.

I have thought about signs. I don’t have a problem with people feeling it or wanting to walk in it. My issue is kids and their bikes or scooters. It makes me feel like my work paid off when people want to walk through it.

Dogs! And if they ask if they bite, I say "Not usually" works every time. Add some death metal coming from the garage for some extra distance.

I havent had that issue yet but have lots of kids in the neighborhood and I assume it will happen at some point. If its kids specifically say 10 or younger i will bite my tongue and remember what a little monster i was as a boy. Older then that i will ask them to keep off. Dogs get the Rachio. At the end of the day though its just grass for me. If a kid left a rut I'd take some sand I keep on hand and fill it in, within a short time the bermuda would have it fixed.

As much as I hate to say it as well, sometimes the area of your lawn that you think is yours is actually city/county Right of way. We don’t own that land, we just keep it looking nice because it makes sense.

Now, I take much more care with my backyard than my front mostly because we spend more time back there, and also it doesn’t get bike traffic straight through cutting the corner! LOL!

The “Clint Eastwood” look on the front porch also works well for intimidation HA !

My lawn is designed for people to use it, specifically my kids.

I have to uncompact areas, and add some extra fertilizer here and there. Use the blower occasionally to stand up matted turf etc
I like green turf, and I cannot lie!
You other lawn nuts can't deny!
That when a lawn shows up
With an itty height of cut
and a reel mower in your face
You get SPRUNG! Want to pull up tough!
Cuz you KNOW that lawn is boss!
Baby got TURF!!!
